Comfortable Low Energy Buildings made up of GFRG with Passive Cooling Systems

Project Highlights

Innovative Building and Cooling Systems U2, a students’ team from IIT Madras, Chennai selected urban areas/cities as their sector for doing the project.

According to IEO 2013, building sector consumes one fifth of the total global energy consumption, and India resembles the same. In India, more than 60% of all the buildings projected for 2030 is yet to build and expected to have increased levels of thermal comfort demand. Thus, HVAC sector is expected to share about 40 – 50 % of the total building energy consumption.

Hence the team has come up with a solution of comfortable low energy buildings made up of GFRG with passive cooling systems.

Who is Behind this Project?

The team is led by Mr. Gurubalan A and the team members are

  • Gurubalan A
  • Dharma Sastha

What is the Project all about?

The proposed solution is focused on an alternative, energy efficient cooling technology-Thermally Activated building System (TABS), Building material – Glass Fibre Reinforced Gypsum (GFRG), Specific roof design.

What is the Uniqueness of the Solution?

  • Economic Benefits
    • Reducing construction cost
    • Lower construction time
    • Saving on energy associated with comfort conditions
  • Environmental Benefits
    • Reducing CO2 emission and embodied energy
    • Conservation of natural resources
    • Eco-friendly and reusable building material
  • Social Benefits
    • Creates comfortable indoor
    • Avoids health issues (IAQ)

What is the Potential Market?

Cost effective eco-friendly houses with a comfortable indoor

  • Mass affordable houses
  • 60% of the buildings projected for 2030 is yet to build and expected to have increased levels of thermal comfort demand. Thus the building construction materials, methods and also its cooling technology for comfort environment are expected to share more than 60 % of the total building energy consumption.
