Smart Home – An Energy Efficient Building by Team Smart Home – Students from Erode

Project Highlights

Smart Home U5, a students’ team from Kongu Engineering College, Erode is doing a project in the urban areas/cities sector.

Buildings are the second highest energy consuming sector next to industrial sector in India. Total energy consumption in buildings is about 21.98 % of the total energy in recent days. More than 60% of energy is consumed for maintaining inner building temperature, ventilation and more.

Energy consumption must be based on various parameters like environmental conditions, habitation, number of persons and so on for better energy conservation. Hence the team has come up with the concept of Smart Home

What is the Project all about?

Intelligent domestic automation system is proposed to be developed using controller such that it selects optimal loads under different circumstances.

Objective 1:

• To design a controller for optimal selection of AC or DC source for reducing energy consumption at home

Objective 2:

• To optimally control electrical appliances based on environmental conditions like temperature, humidity and illumination to conserve energy
• The proposed project will minimize the energy consumption by increasing the usage of solar power and minimizing the usage of grid power

What is the Uniqueness of the Solution?

• At present, all the home appliances do not work completely on AC or DC The available source to the home is either AC or DC, but can never be both.
• So, a platform is proposed to be constructed to use both AC and DC sources simultaneously so as to save energy.
• IOT based automatic control for electrical appliances are advocated.

What is the Potential Market?

• The final product which is proposed to be developed is a controller which controls home appliances like fan, light and switch over between AC and DC sources.
• All the people who are interested in reducing the energy consumption, thereby reducing their electricity bill, will be highly benefited by the present project.
