Energy Positive Treatment Technology for the Removal/Recovery of Hexavalent Chromium

Project Highlights

Cleanext W3, a students’ team from IIT Madras, Chennai chose water and waste management as their sector.

Hexavalent Chromium (Cr+6) is an oxidizing agent used in electroplating, leather tanning, pharmaceutical etc. The removal of Cr(+6) from water is significant due to its high toxicity and tendency to accumulate in living organisms and it also forms toxic carcinogenic compounds.

The existing treatment techniques have many limitations. Hence microbial fuel cells are suggested as suitable treatment system.

Who is Behind this Project?

The team is led by Mr. Diwakar Singh Rathore and the team members are

  • Diwakar Singh Rathore
  • Praveena Gangadharan

What is the Project all about?

MICROBIAL FUEL CELLs (MFC) are Bioelectrochemical systems that can generate electricity via treating organics in wastewater. The Anode half oxidizes the substrate from domestic wastewater- Biofilm formation on anode surface. – Cathode half reduces the toxic Cr+6 to non-toxic Cr+3 form in the presence of an organic electron donor.

Final product is microbial fuel cell prototype model which can simultaneously treat organic and inorganic wastewater. We can scale up this model to treat real time wastewater.

What is the Uniqueness of the Solution?

The uniqueness of our solution lies in its multifaceted abilities of

  • Treating Industrial effluent rich in toxic Cr +6
  • Treating Domestic Wastewater
  • Energy production
  • Resource recovery
  • E-waste management

What is the Potential Market?

MFCs can be installed as a cogeneration unit

  • at source of contamination i.e. electroplating , tanning or metallurgy industries or
  • at wastewater treatment plant or
  • at biomass sites which produces waste rich in organic matter like paper mill or brewery

The global market is estimated to grow from current USD 9 million in 2017 to USD 18.6 million by 2025, with a CAGR of 9.5%. – Micro Market Monitor
